5 Fandom Friday: Late to the Game TV Discoveries

5fandomfriday

This week’s 5 Fandom Friday topic is about TV…more specifically: “Favorite Late To The Game TV Discoveries“. And oh boy, I have loads.

5 Fandom Friday is a weekly link-up about fandom-y goodness, which was started by the lovely ladies of The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick.

Great TV Shows

Merlin

I absolutely adore this show! Everyone seems to have great chemistry, the dialogue is funny, and of course I love the whole story idea (what with me writing my MA thesis about Celtic myths and all…)! Morgana is an admiringly twisted persona and Anthony Stewart Head is brilliant as king Uther.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this show. Marvel is sometimes a bit of a hit and miss for me personally. But I really like the dynamics between the characters in the team as well as the “mutant” plot lines (I’m a sucker for superpowers).

Reign

I don’t know why it took so long for me to start watching Reign. The characters are amazing, I love the plotting and scheming, and the costuming is to die for. It’s also very emotional, I’ve gotten very invested in all the characters (read: I cry over everything).

Lost Girl

Another fantasy show :) This Canadian series is filled with interesting folklore and kick-ass female characters. What more could a gal want? I also like that the main character is a succubus but no one treats her like a crazy woman because of her enhanced sexuality. Instead, it is embraced. Hurrah for female empowerment.

Girls

I was a bit hesitant to start watching this show – I’ve seen all Sex and the City episodes a million times and I wasn’t sure how I felt about the comparisons between the two shows (as in, Girls is Sex and the City for millenials). However, once I did watch a few episodes I really liked the odd characters, especially Adam and Shoshana.

5 Fandom Friday: Growing and Taking Chances

I’ve been away from this little corner of my online world for a bit because I had to make up for my missed Psychology exam (which I couldn’t take because of my bronchitis earlier). BUT now I’m back! And I’m back with a 5 Fandom Friday post: I decided to combine the this week’s and last week’s topics because I feel that they are linked so closely and also because I just want to write down for myself a reminder of my New Year’s resolutions.

So last week’s topic was “5 Ways You Grew/Changed/Evolved in 2015” and this week’s “5 Ways You Are Going To Take Chances in 2016”.

5fandomfriday

5 Ways I Grew/Changed/Evolved in 2015

  1. I faced my Master’s thesis head on during the fall and actually managed to do literary research on a scale I haven’t done before (which gave me confidence that I can finish my thesis now during this semester).
  2. I became more confident about my time management due to writing for three magazines while studying full time. And doing occasional work shifts at the office too.
  3. I also gained a clearer picture of what is is I want to do with my life.
  4. I realized that I should be more proud of my accomplishments instead of minimizing them (and myself as a consequence).
  5. I made more time to do what I want (read: to bury my nose in books) despite my busy schedule.

5 Ways I Am Going To Take Chances in 2016

  1. I’m going to apply to jobs even if I’m not confident I have all the required skills. There’s no harm in trying (even though I’m scared of failure – I just have to overcome that).
  2. I’m going to have fun more! (or continue to have fun at least)
  3. I will travel. Which is always taking a chance :)
  4. I’m going to try and get to know new people.
  5. I will transition into life after university, which is huge!

How did you change last year? And what chances will you take this year?

5 Fandom Friday (Wednesday): Characters I Identify With

5fandomfriday

I never seem to be on schedule with these posts… :( I started work and it’s been pretty busy but I still wanted to publish this one since I knew exactly which characters to include in this (last) week’s list, which had the topic of “characters I most identify with”.

The 5 Fandom Friday linkup is organized by The Nerdy Girlie and SuperSpaceChick.

1. Willow Rosenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer): (how is she on every list I make?) I always identified with the insecure, geeky Willow who was extremely loyal to her friends and had a very fixed comfort zone. She loved books as do I and she was always empathetic toward others.

2. Hermione Granger (Harry Potter): for pretty much the same reasons as with Willow, I always felt a kinship with Hermione. She is sometimes a bit too literal and meticulous but she has a big heart and she is a lovable bookworm (which I hope I am :P )

3. Bonnie Bennett (from The Vampire Diaries): she’s compassionate and loyal, but never afraid to stand up for herself. She has great inner strength and she stands by her beliefs.

4. Susan Pevensie (from Narnia): Literally gets sucked into a magical world (same way as I do with books) but later in life loses her belief in magic. I’ve always loved the idea of magic but my belief has wavered since childhood. I still love stories about everything magical, though. Like fairies. And Mr. Tumnus :P

5. Donna Noble (Doctor Who): Donna is a klutz and sometimes has her foot in her mouth but she means well. I just love her.

+bonus: Pippin from Lord of the Rings (bit of a clueless doofus but again, a lovable one)

5 Fandom Friday: Characters I Identify With

There are loads of other characters as well but these have really stayed with me over the years.

5 Fandom Friday: Nerdiest Things I’ve Done

After missing last week, here is yet another 5 Fandom Friday post! :) This Friday’s topic for the linkup was “5 Nerdiest Things You’ve Ever Done”. You can find more info on the linkup from The Nerdy Girlie or SuperSpaceChick. So, without further ado, here are my top 5 moments of being a complete nerd.

5fandomfriday

1. Waiting in line for way too many hours (from an outsider’s point of view) to get my hands on a Harry Potter book or waiting to see some of the actors when they’ve visited Finland.

2. Dragging my mom around all the Harry Potter and Doctor Who related places in London. I have to give props to her for going along with it :)

3. Waiting for a whole night at a movie theater to get tickets to a Hobbit movie. So no, I didn’t wait to see the movie, I just waited to get the tickets.

4. Reading all my different fandom books (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc.) a million times.

5. Also, watching all my shows (Buffy, Supernatural etc.) a million times.

fandom

I’m sure there are plenty more moments but these were all I could think of right now.

5 Fandom Friday: Favorite Fictional Moms

5 Fandom Friday is back! This week’s 5 Fandom Friday linkup topic was “favorite fictional moms”. I have lots of those because I love mom characters but I tried to narrow it down to just five.

5fandomfriday

1. Molly Weasley

This was such an easy pick. I absolutely adore Molly’s character. She is such a warm and loving person and even took Harry under her wing without even thinking about it twice. Also, she completely kicked ass in the Battle of Hogwarts!

2. Piper Halliwell

One of my favorite characters from one of my favorite shows. Piper was always my favorite of the three Halliwell sisters and I knew that she would make a great mom because she was already in the beginning a very down to earth, warm person. And she held the sisters together even when Phoebe and Prue didn’t get along.

3. Joyce Summers

Joyce was a great mom to Buffy in BtVS and I always felt that considering what a handful she had for a daughter, she took it in strides. Can’t be easy raising a vampire slayer! She became one of my favorites over the course of the show and her death was really tragic.

4. Snow White/Mary Margaret

Snow missed Emma’s childhood but she is doing everything she can to make up for it now. She clearly is a devoted mom and wife and she loves Emma even though it took her a long time to get to know her.

5. Emma Swan & Regina Mills

I couldn’t pick between Emma and Regina because they’re both great moms for Henry. Emma wasn’t there for Henry when he was smaller but like her mom Snow, she has been making up for the lost time. Now she is a great mom who does everything to protect her kid. And Regina: even though she was the Evil Queen, she has turned a new leaf and is trying to be a good person – including a good mom. Of course, she was always a good mom because she always tried to protect Henry. In the beginning, it was her only redeeming characteristic, but now she’s a great character – complex and fascinating!

5 Fandom Friday: Games I Love To Play

gaming

Long time no see… I have skipped the last two posts in this linkup purely because I’ve just been too busy to blog. I’ll be so glad when the next two weeks are over and I can focus on something other than finals and school projects.

In any case, this week’s topic for 5 Fandom Friday was “Games I Love to Play”. (More info on the linkup can be found from The Nerdy Girlie‘s blog or the SuperSpaceChick‘s blog. Basically it’s a weekly reason to fangirl.)

1. Kingdom Hearts

I remember playing this as a kid and I loved it so much. Recently my boyfriend got it for me for PS3 and it was just as a great as I remembered. Funny how some games really do stand the test of time. Anyways, I love the combo of fantasy and Disney. Who doesn’t love Disney really?

2. Kingdom Hearts

I like this for the same reasons as I love the first game. And this one is more difficult, which makes it great for me now. I just wish the third, new game would come out soon!

3. Jak & Daxter I

Another of my childhood games…I was surprised recently while playing these Jak & Daxter games that they’re actually REALLY difficult. I don’t know how I managed to play them when I was younger. But I like that they’re challenging to me even today. Also the story is interesting and I like the little side quests and puzzles.

4. Jak & Daxter III

I skipped the second Jak & Daxter game because it’s just not as fun as the other two. This third game I’m playing right now and it seems like a lot of fun. Running around on a bird-looking dinosaur in some town in the middle of the desert. What could be more fun? ;)

5. Dixit

I had to include a board game too: this one is super fun. If you don’t know it, google it NOW! It has lots of cards with surreal pictures and you’re supposed to give a clue based on the picture you chose and others will have to choose a picture of their own that they feel fits the clue. Hard to explain, super fun to play!

+ bonus: Cards Against Humanity and Little Big Planet

5 Fandom Friday: One Item, Five Styles

I’m a bit late with this 5 Fandom Friday post (because I’m still scrambling to catch up with everything after being sick for two weeks), which has an awesome topic: Styling one fandom item in five different ways. So much fun!

fandom friday fashion

This fandom item is one of my favorite T-shirts: a shirt featuring the 10th Doctor. I got it from London and would probably wear with anything and everything because I love it so much!

5 Fandom Friday: Fictional BFFs

5 Fandom Friday (a linkup hosted by The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick – check their amazing blogs out for more information on the linkup!) is here again. This week’s topic for the post was “My Fictional BFFs”.

fictional BFFs

1. Willow Rosenberg from Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

a loyal friend and a lovable geek…a girl after my own heart! I always related to her a lot while watching Buffy and I think we would be awesome friends!

2. Hermione Granger from Harry Potter:

There’s nothing I don’t love about Hermione. She’s just as much of a bookworm as me and we both like school. She’s also honest and a good friend, which is really important to me.

3. Piper Halliwell from Charmed:

I always loved Piper the most out of the Halliwell sisters. She was the most down to earth and strong, while still being maternal and compassionate.

4. Emily Fields from Pretty Little Liars:

My favorite “liar”. Emily is relaxed, tomboy-ish but also enjoys girly things. Just like me. And we both like swimming. Maybe she’d encourage me to exercise more? :P

5. Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter:

Luna is so quirky and adorable. She is an amazing friend and isn’t afraid to stand up for what she believes in. Anyone would be lucky to have a friend like her!

Honorable mentions go to Pippin from Lord of the Rings, who would make me laugh probably all the time and to Mary Margaret (Snow) from Once Upon a Time, who is sweet, brave and loyal.

5 Fandom Friday: To Be Read/Watched/Played

This week’s 5 Fandom Friday linkup topic was “Things I’ve Bought But Haven’t Read/Watched/Played Yet”. And there are so many… My biggest problem is books, because I buy them all the time and get them as presents and I never really have time to read anything other than school books.

5 Fandom Friday

1. Buffy season 8 Library Edition HC comic book

This is actually my most recent buy, because I’ve been drooling after these comics forever and I finally found them for the cheapest price in an online bookstore. So, I had to get it. Obviously.

2. Buffy: the Making of a Slayer

This book is so fabulous and I got it recently from London (it was on sale and dirt cheap!), but I haven’t gotten around to reading it. Can’t wait though – especially because I did read the introduction to it written by the lovely Amber Benson, who played Tara in BtVS.

3. Outlander #2: Dragonfly in Amber

I fell in love with Outlander when I started watching the tv show, and naturally I picked up the first book as soon as I could…and then I hinted that I wanted the next one for Christmas and my wish came through. I’d love to read it but it’s so thick and I’m in the middle of my exams so I’m scared to pick it up in case I won’t be able to stop reading it. But come vacation, and I’ll read it through in a few days :)

4. Kingdom Hearts 2 for PS3

My boyfriend got this game for me as a present because when I was younger I obsessed over Kingdom Hearts and I have to say that I really still like them a lot. We got the first game as well when it came out on PS3 and that’s why we got this too. We just haven’t really had the time to play it through yet (we’re maybe halfway through) because you really should have at least a few hours to spare when you start gaming…

5. Stanley Kubrick Bluray collection

This I actually got for my boyfriend as a Christmas present and we’ve been meaning to watch all the movies but have only gone through a couple so far.

5 Fandom Friday: Fictional Couples I Ship

5fandomfriday

It’s time for another 5 Fandom Friday (a linkup hosted by The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick – check their amazing blogs out for more info!) and this time the topic is favorite fictional couples I ship.

I’m not like a huge shipper or anything but these couples make me very emotional… Unfortunately though, I had to leave out some that I really would’ve liked to include like Arwen and Aragorn (from LotR), Sherlock and Watson, Piper Halliwell and Leo Wyatt (from Charmed), etc.

But anyways, here are my (current) top 5 OTPs:

Favorite Fictional Couples

1. Spike and Buffy:

I liked Buffy and Angel, but somehow I felt that Spike’s edginess and sarcastic attitude was a better match for the Slayer. I felt really bad when Spike was so madly in love with Buffy and she was very cold toward him and just using him. I loved that in the end he got to redeem himself in her eyes.

2. Amy Pond and Rory Williams:

One of my favorite couples ever! I don’t think I’ll ever stop loving them…Their love was epic and they complemented each other perfectly. Rory’s compassion was the perfect match for Amy’s adventurousness.

3. The Doctor and River Song:

How cute are they?! It was nice that the Doctor finally met his match – someone as crazy, mysterious, and cool as him! Their story is so tragic and lovely at the same time. I don’t think I can ever gush about them enough.

4. Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger:

Again, these two complement each other so well: Hermione is smart and compassionate, while Ron is spontaneous and humorous. I loved seeing their relationship develop throughout the story, from book to book, and finally blossom in the end. Also, can you imagine Hermione reading bedtime stories to their little red-haired children?

5. Willow and Tara:

So lovely, so tragic… I HATED the way their relationship ended: they got through SO much and it was heartless from Joss Whedon to do what he did (watch BtVS to find out – you’ll end up crying…A LOT). They were the sweetest couple (although oddly enough, I ship Willow and Oz as well) and they were so good to each other. Willow gave Tara so much confidence and strength and Tara helped Willow through many hardships and made her a stronger witch.

What couples do you ship? Did I leave some good ones out? (okay, I know I did…five is not enough)
