Exploring the House of Minalima in London

House of Minalima is a wonderful little building near the Palace Theatre, London, where Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play is on at the moment. It is the brainchild of Miraphora (Mina) and Eduardo (Lima) who were the graphic designers for the Harry Potter movies (and now Fantastic Beasts). The building is an exhibition as well as a shop, where you can buy pretty much anything that is on display. The artwork includes issues of Quibbler, wanted posters of Death Eaters, Marauder’s Map, and much much more! All the classic props that you saw in the movies are there to look at…for FREE!

minalima 1

I guess I don’t need to tell you that I jumped at the chance to go see the House of Minalima when I visited London for the Cursed Child play with my friend. The building looks adorable already from the outside and the windows are filled with floating candles and different posters.

minalima 2

The house is divided into the shop on the ground floor, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them on the first floor, and finally the Harry Potter exhibition on the second and third floor.

One of my favorite things was the fireplace that had tons of Hogwarts acceptance letters shooting out of it. I was really tempted to grab one but I guess McGonagall would notice right away that I was too old to attend Hogwarts and that I had stolen someone else’s letter…

minalima 3

The Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes section is magnificent: the colors are popping and in your face, which just makes you feel like you’re right there in their joke shop. I also loved the floors of the building, which have the Marauders’ Map printed on them.

minalima 4

I definitely recommend to anyone who might be going to London, that you also go see the House of Minalima! And get souvenirs too! ;) I bought two sets of cards (one set with Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes designs and one with school books and other classic designs), which I just love love love.

Have you been to House of Minalima? What are your favorite props from the movies?

6 Fandom Inspired Halloween Costumes

Halloween is just around the corner and one of the best things about it are all the costume parties! Thus, I spend probably 80 % of the year thinking about various outfits I could pull off come next Halloween. However, I rarely do the Halloween costumes I really want to try because they are too demanding.

Nonetheless I wanted to show a few options for Halloween costumes.

6 Fandom Inspired Costumes

The first three more demanding ones inspired by Lagertha for Vikings, Amy Pond from Doctor Who, and the Evil Queen (aka Regina Mills) from Once upon a Time.

Halloween outfits 2016

Lagertha is a strong warrior so comfort is key: pants and long sleeved shirt are comfortable and keep you warm in the chilly October weather. A faux fur vest is reminiscent of the ancient warrior people in Norway. Round the whole outfit up with Celtic inspired jewelry, comfy boots, and braided hair and you’ll be the most impressive viking at the party!

Amy’s look is also all about comfort – but with a mini skirt! A soft flannel shirt and a leather jacket and you’re ready to kick some dalek ass! If you have a chance, get a red wig to give the costume the final touch.

The Evil Queen is formidable yet sultry: she favors blacks and deep reds with a fair amount of bling. Black faux leather pants pair nicely with a fancy red top and chunky statement jewelry. Furthermore, it’s an outfit you could even wear to a party around the year. Remember a sleek hairdo and red lips!

Halloween outfits 2016 part 2

If you are in a hurry and want an easier costume, here are a few options. Combine black leggings with a black top and add a headband with cat ears. Voilá – you’re a witch’s familiar!

The Queen of Hearts only needs a voluminous red dress and a little crown to be recognizable. But you can also grab a heart scepter or make one yourself if you want a little addition. And don’t forget to yell “off with their heads” a lot!

The final outfit is inspired by Disney’s Little Mermaid. Ariel’s bra can be faked with a fun sea shell top. Add a starfish barrette in your hair and some mermaid leggings you’re good to go!

What costume are you planning on wearing for Halloween?

Pottermore Sorting: I’m a Hufflepuff?

The sorting is back on Pottermore! I was so excited to find out that the sorting function has been reinstated on Pottermore because it was lovely to have your own house in the previous incarnation of the site. Way back when I first sorted myself into a house, I got Hufflepuff as a result….and the same thing happened again! I’ve always related to Slytherin the most, but I guess I have to come to terms with the fact that inside this Slytherin there was always a little Hufflepuff heart beating.

hufflepuff-pottermore

My wand is a lovely rowan wood one with a dragon heartstring core. Neat, huh? Now if only I could choose a pet to take to Hogwarts (or would I have to attend Durmstrang since I live in Northern Europe?)…

pottermore-wand

Reasons why I’m now all about Hufflepride:

  • They are loyal and kind…what else could you want from a person?
  • They can grow up to be kickass aurors like Tonks!
  • They’re good at herbology (and I could use a greener thumb since I even managed to kill my cactus).
  • They are hardworking but they don’t brag about it – Cedric, anyone?
  • They’re common room is next to the kitchens and I adore food…I’d be having a midnight snack every night.
  • Newt Scamander was a Hufflepuff and from what we know of him so far, he’s a pretty cool cat.
  • They don’t go dark. I wouldn’t want to share my house with a bunch of dark wizards (and yes, I’m aware I said that I relate to Slytherin most. It was based on ambition and a slight dark side – not being a dark wizard!)

Pottermore also now includes new information about other magical schools besides Hogwarts. I love especially the African one…though they all sound absolutely epic!

Did you get sorted already?

5 Fandom Friday: Late to the Game TV Discoveries

5fandomfriday

This week’s 5 Fandom Friday topic is about TV…more specifically: “Favorite Late To The Game TV Discoveries“. And oh boy, I have loads.

5 Fandom Friday is a weekly link-up about fandom-y goodness, which was started by the lovely ladies of The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick.

Great TV Shows

Merlin

I absolutely adore this show! Everyone seems to have great chemistry, the dialogue is funny, and of course I love the whole story idea (what with me writing my MA thesis about Celtic myths and all…)! Morgana is an admiringly twisted persona and Anthony Stewart Head is brilliant as king Uther.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this show. Marvel is sometimes a bit of a hit and miss for me personally. But I really like the dynamics between the characters in the team as well as the “mutant” plot lines (I’m a sucker for superpowers).

Reign

I don’t know why it took so long for me to start watching Reign. The characters are amazing, I love the plotting and scheming, and the costuming is to die for. It’s also very emotional, I’ve gotten very invested in all the characters (read: I cry over everything).

Lost Girl

Another fantasy show :) This Canadian series is filled with interesting folklore and kick-ass female characters. What more could a gal want? I also like that the main character is a succubus but no one treats her like a crazy woman because of her enhanced sexuality. Instead, it is embraced. Hurrah for female empowerment.

Girls

I was a bit hesitant to start watching this show – I’ve seen all Sex and the City episodes a million times and I wasn’t sure how I felt about the comparisons between the two shows (as in, Girls is Sex and the City for millenials). However, once I did watch a few episodes I really liked the odd characters, especially Adam and Shoshana.

5 Fandom Friday (Wednesday): Characters I Identify With

5fandomfriday

I never seem to be on schedule with these posts… :( I started work and it’s been pretty busy but I still wanted to publish this one since I knew exactly which characters to include in this (last) week’s list, which had the topic of “characters I most identify with”.

The 5 Fandom Friday linkup is organized by The Nerdy Girlie and SuperSpaceChick.

1. Willow Rosenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer): (how is she on every list I make?) I always identified with the insecure, geeky Willow who was extremely loyal to her friends and had a very fixed comfort zone. She loved books as do I and she was always empathetic toward others.

2. Hermione Granger (Harry Potter): for pretty much the same reasons as with Willow, I always felt a kinship with Hermione. She is sometimes a bit too literal and meticulous but she has a big heart and she is a lovable bookworm (which I hope I am :P )

3. Bonnie Bennett (from The Vampire Diaries): she’s compassionate and loyal, but never afraid to stand up for herself. She has great inner strength and she stands by her beliefs.

4. Susan Pevensie (from Narnia): Literally gets sucked into a magical world (same way as I do with books) but later in life loses her belief in magic. I’ve always loved the idea of magic but my belief has wavered since childhood. I still love stories about everything magical, though. Like fairies. And Mr. Tumnus :P

5. Donna Noble (Doctor Who): Donna is a klutz and sometimes has her foot in her mouth but she means well. I just love her.

+bonus: Pippin from Lord of the Rings (bit of a clueless doofus but again, a lovable one)

5 Fandom Friday: Characters I Identify With

There are loads of other characters as well but these have really stayed with me over the years.

5 Fandom Friday: Nerdiest Things I’ve Done

After missing last week, here is yet another 5 Fandom Friday post! :) This Friday’s topic for the linkup was “5 Nerdiest Things You’ve Ever Done”. You can find more info on the linkup from The Nerdy Girlie or SuperSpaceChick. So, without further ado, here are my top 5 moments of being a complete nerd.

5fandomfriday

1. Waiting in line for way too many hours (from an outsider’s point of view) to get my hands on a Harry Potter book or waiting to see some of the actors when they’ve visited Finland.

2. Dragging my mom around all the Harry Potter and Doctor Who related places in London. I have to give props to her for going along with it :)

3. Waiting for a whole night at a movie theater to get tickets to a Hobbit movie. So no, I didn’t wait to see the movie, I just waited to get the tickets.

4. Reading all my different fandom books (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc.) a million times.

5. Also, watching all my shows (Buffy, Supernatural etc.) a million times.

fandom

I’m sure there are plenty more moments but these were all I could think of right now.

5 Fandom Friday: Favorite Fictional Moms

5 Fandom Friday is back! This week’s 5 Fandom Friday linkup topic was “favorite fictional moms”. I have lots of those because I love mom characters but I tried to narrow it down to just five.

5fandomfriday

1. Molly Weasley

This was such an easy pick. I absolutely adore Molly’s character. She is such a warm and loving person and even took Harry under her wing without even thinking about it twice. Also, she completely kicked ass in the Battle of Hogwarts!

2. Piper Halliwell

One of my favorite characters from one of my favorite shows. Piper was always my favorite of the three Halliwell sisters and I knew that she would make a great mom because she was already in the beginning a very down to earth, warm person. And she held the sisters together even when Phoebe and Prue didn’t get along.

3. Joyce Summers

Joyce was a great mom to Buffy in BtVS and I always felt that considering what a handful she had for a daughter, she took it in strides. Can’t be easy raising a vampire slayer! She became one of my favorites over the course of the show and her death was really tragic.

4. Snow White/Mary Margaret

Snow missed Emma’s childhood but she is doing everything she can to make up for it now. She clearly is a devoted mom and wife and she loves Emma even though it took her a long time to get to know her.

5. Emma Swan & Regina Mills

I couldn’t pick between Emma and Regina because they’re both great moms for Henry. Emma wasn’t there for Henry when he was smaller but like her mom Snow, she has been making up for the lost time. Now she is a great mom who does everything to protect her kid. And Regina: even though she was the Evil Queen, she has turned a new leaf and is trying to be a good person – including a good mom. Of course, she was always a good mom because she always tried to protect Henry. In the beginning, it was her only redeeming characteristic, but now she’s a great character – complex and fascinating!

5 Fandom Friday: Games I Love To Play

gaming

Long time no see… I have skipped the last two posts in this linkup purely because I’ve just been too busy to blog. I’ll be so glad when the next two weeks are over and I can focus on something other than finals and school projects.

In any case, this week’s topic for 5 Fandom Friday was “Games I Love to Play”. (More info on the linkup can be found from The Nerdy Girlie‘s blog or the SuperSpaceChick‘s blog. Basically it’s a weekly reason to fangirl.)

1. Kingdom Hearts

I remember playing this as a kid and I loved it so much. Recently my boyfriend got it for me for PS3 and it was just as a great as I remembered. Funny how some games really do stand the test of time. Anyways, I love the combo of fantasy and Disney. Who doesn’t love Disney really?

2. Kingdom Hearts

I like this for the same reasons as I love the first game. And this one is more difficult, which makes it great for me now. I just wish the third, new game would come out soon!

3. Jak & Daxter I

Another of my childhood games…I was surprised recently while playing these Jak & Daxter games that they’re actually REALLY difficult. I don’t know how I managed to play them when I was younger. But I like that they’re challenging to me even today. Also the story is interesting and I like the little side quests and puzzles.

4. Jak & Daxter III

I skipped the second Jak & Daxter game because it’s just not as fun as the other two. This third game I’m playing right now and it seems like a lot of fun. Running around on a bird-looking dinosaur in some town in the middle of the desert. What could be more fun? ;)

5. Dixit

I had to include a board game too: this one is super fun. If you don’t know it, google it NOW! It has lots of cards with surreal pictures and you’re supposed to give a clue based on the picture you chose and others will have to choose a picture of their own that they feel fits the clue. Hard to explain, super fun to play!

+ bonus: Cards Against Humanity and Little Big Planet

5 Fandom Friday: Total Fangirl Moments

Once again I’m late with this post…BUT HERE IT IS! So last Friday’s 5 Fandom Friday topic was “Five Times I Totally Fangirled”. The linkup is hosted by Super Space Chick and The Nerdy Girlie and you can find more info about it from their blogs!

3. the time I went to the Warner Bros studio tour with my friend and saw all the amazing set pieces and props. It was such a magical way to spend time.

5 Fandom Friday: One Item, Five Styles

I’m a bit late with this 5 Fandom Friday post (because I’m still scrambling to catch up with everything after being sick for two weeks), which has an awesome topic: Styling one fandom item in five different ways. So much fun!

fandom friday fashion

This fandom item is one of my favorite T-shirts: a shirt featuring the 10th Doctor. I got it from London and would probably wear with anything and everything because I love it so much!
